Are you doing the right thing?

In the wake of NFL player Aaron Hernandez being charged with 1st degree murder, the New England Patriots worked swiftly to cut all ties with the former tight end. In fact, the team went so far as to allow fans to swap his #81 jerseys for another more respectable player for free.

I believe the team did the right thing. After all, would you want your kid wearing a shirt emblazoned with the name of an accused murderer? And, how about the poor family of the deceased?

This incident raises the issue: are you doing the right thing?

How do you know?

  1. If you feel good about your decision, you are on the right path

  2. If you feel like you’re going to vomit, you’ve made the wrong choice

  3. If you don’t know the answer, feel free to let it “marinate.” Often, a clearer decision arrives in a few days.

If you know me, then you know that I believe in building a strong biz replete with contracts and agreements, but I’ll tell you, sometimes caring and empathy trumps all. One of my clients is struggling with cancer; do you think I let him put a hold on coaching? You betcha! Another one has critical family issues and she needs to focus.

Here’s my advice today: make the right decision and be glad you did.
