If you’re trying to capture media or viral attention, it’s critical to speak so others hear you…and remember you. I’ve coached hundreds of entrepreneurs and executives on speaking to the media using these techniques:
Create a Mnemonic Device – You need something catchy besides 3 boring points. I created, for example, the PB&J formula – repurposed, of course, to express the sandwiching of ideas.
Use Metaphors & Similes – I often say that “naming is to branding as location is to real estate; it’s the essential foundation upon which to build a brand.” Your goal is to translate the unfamiliar topic to the familiar.
Craft Head Whip Expressions – Kick to the curb cliché statements such as “disruptive” or “revolutionary.” Invent new phrases such as “awe dropping”; show your distaste with colorful expressions such as “I’d rather put forks in my eyeballs.”
The bottom line is this: the media wants arresting statements; they want to grab viewers by the neck and pull them in.
