Is Your Marketing Too Clever?

I just rented the American version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and was shocked to read this disclaimer on the Blockbuster site:

The DVD is designed to look like a bootlegged copy of the film. Please be advised that the disc is the authentic DVD direct from Sony Pictures.

What’s the lesson here? If you have to explain your marketing, it isn’t working!!!

To acid test your messages, ALWAYS use the “mom” test: run it by your mom (whom I assume doesn’t work in your biz or understand it). And, if she understands it, go with it!
